The origins of the Museum

Save the historical heritage of Złotostockie

On November 22, 2013, in the building of the former miners’ guild hall on Złota Street, the grand opening of the Chamber of Mining and History of Złoty Stok took place.

The chamber was established thanks to private funds. It was created by Elżbieta Szumska in cooperation with Piotr Romanowski to preserve the historical heritage of Złoty Stok. Most of the exhibits in the Gold Mine Museum belong to the creators’ own collections, but many historical memorabilia were also donated by residents who joined this wonderful initiative. Thanks to this, after many years, a museum was established in Złoty Stok, which is visited not only by residents, but also by tourists from Poland and abroad. It is also a museum loved by self-proclaimed gold prospectors who are fascinated by stories about this unique metal. If you are interested in this type of museum, Lower Silesia should definitely be on your list!

The Guttler family

The story of the family that changed Złoty Stok

Behind every mine there are people—and in Złoty Stok, one of the most influential families was the Guttlers.

The Guttler (Güttler) family was a key driver of industrial development in Złoty Stok and the surrounding area. Its progenitor was Karl Güttler (1791–1846), who started business activity in this region. His son, Wilhelm Güttler (1822–1874) expanded the business: gunpowder production and industrial management, as well as technological innovations, including the recovery of gold from production waste; this achievement earned him a gold medal at the World Exhibition in London in 1851.

In 1874 Paulina Güttler commissioned the construction of a family mausoleum in the old cemetery in Złoty Stok — it was an expression of respect for the family’s achievements and care for the memory of future generations. A total of eight family members were buried in the mausoleum, including Wilhelm, Paulina, their son Herman, grandchildren, and two boys, Berthold and Walther.

After World War II, the mausoleum fell into disrepair — vandalism destroyed some of the tombs and plaques. It was only in recent years that revitalization work was carried out: renovation of the facade, interior, and landscaping around the building. During the renovation, eight sarcophagi were discovered.

After World War II, the mausoleum fell into disrepair—vandalism destroyed some of the tombs and plaques. It was only in recent years that revitalization work was carried out: renovation of the facade, interior, and landscaping around the building. During the renovation, eight sarcophagi were discovered — five of them were reassembled.

Today, the role of the Guttlers is remembered not only through the mausoleum — their activities included industrial plants, the production of arsenic and gunpowder, the employment of local residents, as well as social and charitable initiatives. Many former residents of Złoty Stok and history enthusiasts believe that without their contribution, the town would not have achieved such industrial and cultural significance.

Thanks to our collaboration with Google Arts & Culture, you can trace the history of the Guttlers and view archival photos, documents, and exhibits related to this family.

📖 This story not only complements the history of the mine—it is part of the fate of the entire community and becomes part of your tour.
